In order to determine bio-indicators of Adriatic water masses an interdisciplinary study was conducted in winter conditions in the southern Adriatic Sea. Phytoplankton and zooplankton community was assessed using multiple tools (light and electron microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular phylogeny, high-throughput sequencing, qPCR, high performance liquid chromatography) to confirm the presence and to determine distribution, abundance and diversity of the proposed bio-tracers in sampled water masses. We have proposed cyanobacteria, picoeukaryotes and pennate diatoms as good indicators of the changes in the Adriatic Sea.

Looking into more detail in the pennate diatoms of the southern Adriatic we have described seven new diatom species from genus Entomoneis (Mejdandžić et al 2017, 2018) and six new Nitzscha species were proposed (under review in Journal of Phycology): Entomoneis tenera Mejdandžić & Bosak, Entomoneis pusilla Bosak & Mejdandžić, Entomoneis gracilis Mejdandžić & Bosak, Entomoneis vilicicii Bosak & Mejdandžić, Entomoneis infula Mejdandžić & Bosak, Entomoneis adriatica Mejdandžić & Bosak, and Entomoneis umbratica Mejdandžić & Bosak.

TurtleBIOME – Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) microbiome: insight into endozoic and epizoic communities

UIP-2017-05-5635

TurtleBIOME project contribution is to provide a clear, complete and detailed image of the microbial composition of the surface biofilm and the gut microbiome of loggerhead sea turtles from the Mediterranean Sea. We plan to achieve this goal by pairing state-of-the-art culture-independent molecular approach, e.g. new generation sequencing (NGS) of prokaryotic and eukaryotic components of the micro-community with classical approach of microorganism cultivation, experiments and light and electronic microscope observations of biofilm components.

Contribution of this project to the Croatian National Diatom Collection is in describing new epizoic diatom species which type specimens are deposited in the Collection: Proschkinia sulcata Majewska, Van de Vijver & Bosak, Proschkinia torquata Bosak, Van de Vijver & Majewska and Majewskaea istriaca.
